I think that some people hide behind computers to say things that they may be too scared to say face to face with someone but I also think that someone who bullies people online is probably a bully anyways.
This week we also talked about digital identity. It seems like after all of the horror stories we have heard about teachers and Facebook or other social media, it would be the best decision to just stay off of these sites all together. It turns out that employers are expecting you to have at least some presence online. The trick is to make sure that it is a positive one.
That is what this class is about: connecting with other educators online, sharing resources, and creating a positive digital identity.

Digital dualism is a scary term to think about. Can it really be that we are different when posting online compared to when we use our spoken words? Or are our most basal aspects of our personalities just amplified online? For example, I am quite shy in person, but I like to have intelligent conversations. Posting online allows me to have those discussions without letting my shyness hinder those discussion.
ReplyDeleteGood post Karlie. It definitely scares me a bit to stay on social media with the hundreds of students I will end up teaching in my career. Without a doubt ninety percent of them will look me up on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram because I have them all. Even with each of my social sites well protected, kids could still find their way. It is almost easier getting off those social media sites. Deleting pictures and watching what you post is time consuming and takes to much thought. I think it changes you identity a bit when you have to follow certain protocol when on these media sites.
